Goulias Tapped to Develop Renewable Construction Materials

Joshua Mazurek visitDimitrios Goulias, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Maryland (UMD), has been awarded a $735,000 grant by the auto recycling industry to develop innovative, renewable construction materials from residue produced during the process of auto shredding.

The new materials will be designed to meet criteria set by the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Low-Carbon Transportation Materials (LCTM) program. The program is part of a Biden administration effort to reduce the environmental impact of construction and materials, which contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions.

Early Career Distinguished Alumni Association Visit

Joshua Mazurek, a distinguished alumnus of the Class of 2011, returned to campus on September 25 to visit the lab where he once studied and worked. This visit was not only a nostalgic trip but also an opportunity for passionate and inspiring communication. During the visit, Joshua had in-depth conversations with the faculty and students of the lab, sharing his career experience and personal growth story after graduation.

His arrival was warmly welcomed, and the faculty and students of the lab were excited about the return visit of this successful alumnus. Joshua offered his insights on current industry trends and future technological developments and provided valuable suggestions for the research direction of the lab. He encouraged students to actively participate in research projects and continue to explore new scientific fields, while also emphasizing the importance of teamwork.

Eun Co-Chairs KGS/Geotech-Institute Joint WorkshopUniversity of Maryland (UMD) Assistant Professor Jongwan Eun played a key role at the 2nd Korean Geotechnical Society (KGS) and ASCE Geo-Institute (G-I) Joint Workshop, held at Kyung Hee University in South Korea from August 9-10.

Eun, a faculty member in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, served as co-chair and session moderator for the event, which was part of an ongoing collaboration between KGS and the G-I. It built off the momentum gained during an inaugural workshop held in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2022. As with the previous workshop, the goal of this year’s events was to strengthen the relationship between these two leading geotechnical organizations and to address pressing geotechnical challenges facing both countries.

UMD Civil and Environmental Engineering in Top 20

EUMD Civil and Environmental EngineeringCivil and environmental engineering (CEE) graduate programs at the University of Maryland (UMD) rank in the top 20 among public universities across the nation, according to the latest U.S. News & World Report (USNWR) rankings .

The CEE department, based at the A. James Clark School of Engineering, received a ranking of #19 among public universities and #31 overall. This marks a notable advancement from last year’s rankings, with the department climbing four spots among public universities and five spots nationally, after previously holding #23 and #36, respectively.
