Micro Deval Testing System

The increasingly popular Micro-Deval Apparatus measures abrasion resistance and durability of mineral aggregates in the 9.5 to 19mm size range. An aggregate sample is placed in a sealed stainless steel jar with a 5000g abrasive charge of 9.5mm diameter stainless steel balls and water, then rotated at 100 rpm for two hours. Aggregate quality is determined by percentage loss in gradation results at completion. Smaller equipment size, lower sample quantities and a simpler procedure make the method easier and less costly to perform than traditional methods.
Rolling Thin Film Oven

The Rolling Thin Film Oven (RTFO) test is used to measure the effect of heat and air on a moving film of semi-solid asphalt binder. The results of this treatment are determined from measurements of the binder properties before and after the test.
Repeatability of the test is directly related to the accuracy with which the oven temperature can be maintained and the reproducibility of the thermal rise time of the system. The invention of RTFO by James Cox & Sons led to the present day AASHTO, ASTM and EN standards for Rolling Thin Film Oven test (RTFOT).

Aggregate Image Measurement System

A turntable configuration was selected for the AIMS2, powered by a stepper-motor gear-head combination to provide the sturdy platform needed for presenting the material to the imaging area. This configuration provides an added advantage by helping to reduce the size requirements of the backlight.
The AIMS2 turntable configuration utilizes a removable tray specific for each aggregate size to position the particles properly for imaging. The research system required the operator to place each coarse particle onto the table position accurately at specific grid points. The AIMS2 turntable trays simplify the material loading by requiring the operator to place the particles in a groove in the tray. Separation between particles is required, but the system also has routines to identify touching particles so that they are not included in the results. Fine particles are simply dispersed thinly over the tray groove in a manner similar to that used in the AIMS1 system.

Gyrotronic – Superpave Gyratory Compactor

The Model 4140 allows the user to produce either 150-mm diameter or 100-mm diameter asphalt specimens. The user specifies the number of gyrations (or end specimen height) and consolidation pressure. The user can adjust the angle of gyration from 0.5 to 2.0°; the default angle is 1.25°. When using the automatic compaction option, the user may also choose to automatically send the gyration versus height and/or pressure versus height data to a computer or a printer. The unit also allows manual printing of the last six compacted specimens. All output is in SI units as described in ASTM E380-90A Standard for Metric Practice.
